Arts Educator
The Watermill Center seeks a passionate and dynamic Part-Time Arts Educator to support its growing education and public programs. This role involves facilitating arts-based workshops in local schools, participating in educational events both on-site and off-site, leading interactive tours of The Watermill Center and its exhibitions, and supporting administrative tasks as needed. This temporary position is funded for the 2025-2026 school year (September through June) with the possibility of continuing beyond that time, pending further funding.
About The Watermill Center
Founded in 1992 by Robert Wilson, The Watermill Center is an interdisciplinary laboratory for the arts and humanities situated on ten acres of Shinnecock ancestral territory on Long Island’s East End. With an emphasis on creativity and collaboration, Watermill offers artist residencies and education programs that integrate contemporary artistic practice with resources from the humanities and research from the sciences.
Location
Situated at 39 Watermill Towd Rd, a 20,000-square-foot main facility houses a Study Library, an Art Collection, spaces for rehearsals, performances, and exhibitions, a kitchen with dining areas, and office space. The Artist Residence, at 11 Watermill Towd Road, is a 8,500-square-foot facility with eight private bedrooms, a kitchen, living areas, and an amphitheater. The Art Collection consists of 5,000+ works of art and artifacts, ranging from ancient to contemporary, including numerous museum-quality works from Indonesia, Africa, and Oceania, as well as works by contemporary artists such as Paul Thek, Donald Judd, Bruce Nauman, Robert Mapplethorpe, Agnes Martin, among others.
Schedule
Part-time role; approximately 10–20 hours per week for the duration of the 2025-2026 school year (September through June). Position may continue beyond that timeframe pending funding.
Compensation
$25 per hour
Key Responsibilities
Marketing & Communications
- Facilitate arts education workshops and programs in collaboration with local schools and community partners
- Assist in developing educational content and lesson plans that align with Watermill’s mission and exhibitions
- Adapt program materials to suit bilingual audiences, supporting accessibility and cultural relevance
- Lead engaging and age-appropriate tours of The Watermill Center, including its grounds and galleries
- Serve as a cultural ambassador for The Watermill Center within the East End community
- Maintain attendance records and assist with program evaluation and reporting
- Support education, public programs, and special events as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, Museum Studies, or related field
- Fluency in English and Spanish
- Minimum of 2 years experience in arts education, museum education, or a related field
- Strong communication and public speaking skills, especially with youth audiences
- Familiarity with contemporary and interdisciplinary art practices
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse communities
- Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends
- Must have reliable transportation to travel to local schools and community sites
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with bilingual learners or in multicultural settings
- Experience in K-12 classrooms
- Experience in expressive arts, healing arts, art therapy, etc.
- Knowledge of the East End’s cultural landscape a plus
