Fire Shift Commander

<div style="text-align: justify;"><strong style="color: inherit;font-style: normal;text-align: justify;text-indent: 0.0px;">REQUIRED ATTACHMENT:  Verification of completion of the Commander Academy portion of the Shift Commander Task Book issued by the Yakima Fire Department <u>MUST BE ATTACHED</u> to your application.</strong></div><br><strong>MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS</strong><div style="text-align: justify;"><div style="text-align: justify;">To act or promote to Shift Commander candidates must have minimum of five (5) years of service with the Yakima Fire Department as Company Officer and have completed probation as a Captain.  Candidates must also have successfully completed the Commander Academy portion of the Shift Commander Task Book issued by the Yakima Fire Department.</div><br></div><strong>LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES</strong> <br>Must possess and maintain a valid State Driver's License (United States) and a current EMT certificate.<p data-pasted="true" style="text-align: justify;">Under the direction of the Deputy Fire Chief, is<strong><em> </em></strong>responsible for directing and coordinating the fire suppression activities of the department on an assigned shift to ensure the firefighting readiness of all personnel and equipment on a shift through subordinate officers. Performs administrative and command functions as assigned.</p><p data-pasted="true" style="text-align: justify;">Plans, directs, and coordinates the fire suppression activities. Responds to fire alarms and other emergencies; directs and coordinates fire suppression efforts unless relieved by a superior officer; reviews reports prepared by subordinate officers; expands or prepares reports and transmits to Fire Chief.   </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Supervises, through subordinate officers, personnel and equipment on an assigned shift; ensures that the shift efficiency is maintained.  Ensures full fire readiness of assigned shift; makes inspections and evaluations of personnel, equipment and facilities. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Performs special administrative staff assignments and assumes command of the department in the absence of the Chief and/or Deputy Fire Chiefs.  Attends meetings commensurate to position responsibilities.  Administers the union contract, performs administrative assignments and may be responsible for ancillary duties in purchasing, training or other supervisory duties as assigned. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Regular and reliable attendance is required.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Performs other related duties as assigned.</p><p data-pasted="true" style="text-align: justify;">Extensive knowledge of: department goals, policies, procedures and technical operations; safe work and workplace practices; modern supervisory principals and practice; aircraft rescue and firefighting,<strong><em> </em></strong>and fire prevention. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Ability to:  plan, direct, and coordinate the work of subordinates; analyze situations correctly and quickly,  implement the effective use of apparatus and equipment and supervise multiple companies of fire fighters under hazardous or stressful conditions using the Incident Command structure; establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, public and city officials, and the general public and to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing; work effectively in a hostile environment and withstand outside pressures; maintain confidences and routinely handle sensitive department materials; analyze problems and affect solutions.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>PHYSICAL DEMANDS:</strong> <br>Must certify ability to meet and/or pass testing of all required physical ability and medical standards. Work is occasionally performed in an office environment while sitting or standing for periods of time. Constant use of all senses including feeling/talking/hearing/seeing while performing duties and while communicating with co-workers, general public and completing all tasks as assigned. Constant use of both hands in reaching/ handling/grasping/fingering/pushing/pulling while performing duties. Work is frequently performed outside with all weather extremes and may be exposed to insects, animals, pollen, dust, water, dirt, fire, smoke, hot metal, loud noises, electrical hazards, bio-hazardous materials, noxious odors, fumes, or chemicals, solvents, violence, unpleasant working conditions, and/or traffic.  May be exposed to hazards affiliated with providing emergency care.  Frequent kneeling/ bending/crouching/stooping/ reaching/walking/running and may be done on uneven or rough terrain. Emergency situations may require lifting and carrying 100 pounds or more. Occasional heavy work includes operating heavy vehicles, equipment, and machinery. Occasionally ascends/descends stairs, ladders and inclines while maintaining balance. May work at heights, confined spaces, with others, or in noisy work area. Must be able to distinguish color and maintain long-term and short-term memory. Will be required to wear safety protective gear when necessary.
