Receptionist/Front Desk/Check-Out

Description:

A nonexempt, clerical position responsible for greeting/assisting visitors/patients in a professional manner, check patients out by entering charges, collecting co-pays/payments and scheduling return appointments.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Promptly and professionally answers telephone calls.
  • Greets visitors and assists them as appropriate. Phones or pages employees to meet visitors, directs visitors to appropriate waiting areas, and appropriately and courteously screen solicitors for relevance to organization needs.
  • Checks patient information (address, phone number, insurance) to make sure that it is correct. Ensures that all paper work is correctly completed and signed in all the appropriate areas. Obtains copies of all insurance cards and obtains a photo ID of all patients.
  • Explains financial requirements to the patients or responsible parties and collects copays as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

One year of experience in customer service or reception, preferably in a health care environment.

Other Requirements:

Neat in appearance

Minimal errors

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and organization services.

Skills:

  • Ability to use multi-line phone system, including transferring calls and paging.
  • Adequate hearing to answer phone and speak with patients.
  • Ability to speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard by callers and patients.

Abilities:

  • Elicits appropriate information to route calls to the appropriate person.
  • Prevents, calms, or defuses irate patients by working with them to identify concerns.
  • Have the ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all business/work information.
  • Ability to enter accurate data.

Equipment Operated:

Standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc.

Work Environment:

Position is in a well-lighted office environment. Occasional extended hours.

Mental/Physical Requirements:

Involves standing approximately 90 percent of the day, sitting the remainder.
